I came home from a diving trip to Mull this weekend and switched my computer on yesterday. Click...Pzzzt...Bang....Nothing.
Apart from the burning smell.
Oh no - a quick sniff around the box (literally) tells me that the smell is coming from the power supply and the lack of anything happening when I turn the PC on tells me that it is toast (literally).
I happened to have a spare power supply around the place in another (unused) computer, so I decided to make use of that. Problem was that it would take me about 30 mins to replace it all and only then would I know if it had taken the motherboard with it or, even worse, caused some disk corruption.
Thankfully, it was just the power supply - although it did make me think about the last time that I backed up the data on my machine. I have all important data manually mirrored across two independent drives which I do most weeks, but I only get around to copying to DVD once a month or so!
Given Martins recent issues, I should probably back-up to DVD more often!
