Claire and I managed to go for a rare meal out last Saturday and we chose La Garrigue in Edinburgh.

The location was central, and we started with a quick drink at The World's End pub on the Royal mile before the 2 minute walk to the restaurant.

The restaurant itself was cosy and inviting, and the staff were attentive. We were offered an A la Carte and Table D'hote menu. We decided on the A la Carte menu. I started with the "La soupe de poissons comme pour George" [Fish soup] which was rich and full-bodied (although a little gritty at the bottom - a sign that the shellfish needs to be washed more carefully?) and followed this with Le fillet de boeuf grillé, jardinière de légumes [beef fillet] which was fantastic - both tasty and tender.

Claire had a wood pigeon salad to start, followed by "Le cassoulet aux trois viandes". Cassoulet is a classic French dish - and this one was special. A delightful mixture of pork, lamb, duck, Toulouse sausage and beans. Seriously tasty.

We both finished with the cheese selection which included a blue cheese, a goat's cheese and (I believe) a Ewe's milk cheese, and one more (although I forget what that was). We both had to have the cheese given the recommendation that came with the main course menu: "Cheese lovers, you want us to serve our products at the right temperature; please assist us to do so by ordering your cheese with your main meal" A great idea, although we did have to ask for the desert menu (which was not supplied with the starter/main menu) so that we could decide if we wanted the cheese! Desert menu available here.

We had a wonderful bottle of Toulouse red wine with this, which went very well with the meal.

Overall, the meal was very good, with some fantastic quality produce. The cost was about £100 for two of us including the wine. Although I was happy to add a tip to the bill, I don't like being presented with a bill already including a 10% tip for a table of two - what happened to choice?

I would definitely consider going again (once I have saved up again)!

Got to agree with you Matt. I've been going to La Garrigue since just after it opened and have never had a bad experience. It is one of the few restaurants that I will always recommend to people who ask for suggestions of somewhere to eat in Edinburgh. Folks from all manner of places have gone at my suggestion (even my boss's boss's boss!) and have left delighted at the end of a lovely meal.

Just been last night. Sorry to disagree with you both but I found the experience a bit of a let down after the likes of Daniels or Cafe Marlayne. Overly expensive, the duck was undercooked to the point of flabby, no crispy outer skin, salad consisted of a few undressed lettuce leaves, an perhaps worst of all the mash was like something supermarkets serve up in microwaveable meals and this seemed to accompany most of their mains. To cap it all a hefty service charge was added to our already overpriced bill ( 4 people 4 apperitifs 2 courses each £149 ) for people who were only doing their job. Disappointing.

Margaret - sorry it was such a disappointment.

As I mentioned, the service charge thing annoyed me also. My party only consisted of my wife and I and we only saw the waitress when she took our order and then served the food - certainly not too strenuous an evening for her!

I had a concern about my fish soup being gritty (poor preparation) and your description would suggest that maybe they have let their name go to their heads and forgotten about the basics?

I haven't been back since my first post, and I may not bother now - shame.

I visited La Garrigue last night with two others, and it was fantastic. I had eaten there once before and I remember the impression I had of the restaraunt being understated but the food fantastic. This was the same feeling last night.

Everyone at my table thoroughly enjoyed their meal and you have to say they certainly give decent sized portions! The salad was dressed without the over-zealous use of oil as found in many eateries.

The service charge is a little expensive and it would be far better for this to be removed from the bill.

I would certainly go there again and I think you should too Matt!

EG - Possibly. Thing is, at that price, I can think of other certainties that I can go to and not worry that the experience may not be all that I want it to be.
