Claire and I went to see this film on Tuesday (27 April). Thanks Radio 1 for the free tickets.
The film stars Kate Winslet and Jim Carey in what can only be described as an amazing film. Is it a comedy? Not totally. Is it a romantic film - not totally. So what is it?
It's a film that, if you can get past the first 15 minutes (which are slow), is amazing. The premise is that you can have people 'removed' from your memory so that those memories cannot hurt anymore, and what this really means. Do you really want to have all the bad memories removed - surely that makes up part of your life? The good and the bad. If you have no bad memories, how do you measure the 'goodness' of the good memories?
The film is one that needs 100% concentration as the action tends to move from future, to past, to present, without really explaining where you are. This tends to mean that you can watch 5 minutes of film before realising 'when' it is from. Although Kate's hair colour tends to help - watch the film, you'll understand.
This concentration is worth it, as the plot is unique and the performance is enticing - really drawing you into the characters' lives, fears and hopes. And only once does Jim Carey pull a face - which makes it a far better film.
